When we think of the word heritage, we understand it to reference something that is of great value given to us. Isaiah 41:10 “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” It is exciting to know the unique relationship we have with God. Fear is removed as we meditate on the power of our unchanging Savior. And yet, God reveals our great heritage. Israel was promised a land. Exodus 6:8 “And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD.” The land speaks of a dwelling place. You and I have a dwelling place in heaven. Psalm 119:111 “Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.” The testimonies speak of God’s precious Word. We have the privilege of listening to God’s commands and words of comfort as we read the Bible. God had commanded Adam and Eve to “…be fruitful and multiply…” The Psalmist understood the benefit of children. Psalm 127:3 “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” Our children are a perfect gift from God. They are the evidence of God’s blessings. We have been entrusted with the responsibility to teach, guide, and mold them into the very image of Jesus Christ. A generation can either thrive through the blessings of God’s love. Or, it can struggle under the chastening hand of God. Let’s do all that we can to prepare the next generation to enjoy the fullness of God’s blessing. They are our heritage!
