II Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” II Timothy 3:16,17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” As school is about to open, these verses remind us of the necessity to be good students. We must acknowledge the role of a sound education to prepare us for the demands in life. However, we must also be aware of the security we find through the Word of God. Academics enable us to fulfill our duties in this world. Spiritual growth builds confidence in our standing with God. “Study” is the devotion of time and attention to acquiring knowledge. “Scripture” is the sacred writings of Christianity contained in the Bible. “Good works” is having the required qualities; of a high standard. A.W. Tozer said, “Refuse to be average. Let your heart soar as high as it will.” Dr. Bob Jones Sr. used to say: “Anything less than your best is a sin.” Ravi Zacharias stated, “Beginning well is a momentary thing; finishing well is a lifelong thing.” David Livingstone said, “Fear God and work hard.” May we never be satisfied with mediocrity.
