This is the first Sunday in the new year. As we gather around the Lord’s Supper, let’s be thankful for the blessings of God in the past year and have great hope and expectations of God’s power in 2013. A great way to begin this new year is determine that every decision I make will be based on the Word of God; in every situation that I may face I will exercise absolute dependence upon God; and that every task I seek to accomplish will be for the glory of God. Here is a thought provoking poem by Mary Fairchild: “Instead of making a New Year’s resolution. Consider committing to a biblical solution. Your promises are easily broken. Empty words, though earnestly spoken. But God’s Word transforms the soul. By His Holy Spirit making you whole. As you spend time alone with Him. He will change you from within.” The observation of the Lord’s Supper is a great opportunity to reflect on the grace, mercy and forgiveness of God. However, it is also a great place to humble ourselves in complete surrender to our God. Ephesians 2:4-6 “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” II Corinthians 12:9  “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
